Raw Pigment Paintings
The ‘Raw Pigment Paintings’ series explore colour and natural materials. natural pigments and materials to create subtle compositions that reference the natural world, time and various internal states. series of paintings made using turmeric, olive leaf and pomegranate seeds in their raw, powdered form. Each material is meticulously rubbed by hand onto the canvas, which becomes deeply marked through repetitive motion. The materials themselves are imbued with history—turmeric is mixed with milk and spices for a homemade remedy that has been used in South Asia for centuries, to offer nourishment and warmth. Both olives and pomegranates also carry deep cultural and spiritual associations. As the natural pigments interact with the linen canvas and embrace the elements, the works not only explore temporal notions but also capture the transience of the paintings themselves as they metamorphose and evolve over time. Using natural materials in their pure form on the canvas means that their appearance transforms over time. My exploration of notions of time through the faded, multi-tonal gradients that I create are further amplified by the life of the painting itself, which metamorphoses and eventually may dissipate.
